Students From the School of Chemical Engineering, USM Won Prizes in NACES 2021
12th December 2021, the School of Chemical Engineering’s Students of Universiti Sains Malaysia participated in the annual event of the National Chemical Engineering Symposium 2021 (NACES 2021) from 10th to 12th December 2021. This year event was organized by the Institution of Chemical Engineers – UTM Student Chapter (IChemE–UTM SC), in collaboration with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) of Malaysia. The theme for this symposium is “Industrial Revolution 4.0: Transcending Process Industry Boundaries”.
Our young chemical engineering students competed in six categories in the symposium which are Infographic Competition, Technical Presentation Competition, Technical Case Study Competition, Technical Essay Writing Competition, Technical Video Competition and Chemical Engineering Challenges. Their efforts are paid off by bagging three first runner-up places and a second runner-up place.
A third-year student, Wendy Beh Xin Ai won second runner-up place in Technical Essay Writing Competition with an essay entitled “The Silver Bullet of Process Industry: Artificial Intelligence”. Her essay reported the important role of artificial intelligence in the oil & gas industry, combating environmental issues and their current challenges.
In Infographic Competition, Ooi Gia Xin, a third-year student won first runner-up place. Her infographic entitled “IOT-based Smart Greenhouse Automation” received over 400 likes on Instagram which contributes 10% of the overall marks and the remainder by the judges. The infographic highlights the benefit of IOTs and their operating values for smart greenhouse automation to fight hunger by 2050.
A technical video entitled “Predictive Maintenance – A Leading Role in Smarter Processes” won first runner-up place in the Technical Video Competition. The video was made by the Cloud Engineers team on the predictive maintenance for increasing productivity, ensuring the security of capital investment, worker safety and environmental sustainability. The members of the Cloud Engineers team are Chew Yen Min (3rd year), Eirene Kong (3rd year), Ooi Qian Hui (4th year) and Teoh Wei Xin (4th year).
Sumajori team competed in the Technical Case Study Competition also won first runner-up place. The team members are 3rd year students, they are Johannes Tan Yue Shern, Mak Kar Yee, Rina Jong Suk Wen and Subathra A/P Parthipan. This competition was conducted in two stages and each team requires to provide a technical solution for a specific case study given. In the preliminary stage, the case study was about plastic waste conversion to high-value products, whereas in the final stage it was about reducing energy usage and consumption for the oleochemical industry. Sumajori team proposed a biomass co-plastic torrefaction process for solid fuel production in the preliminary stage and smart co-generation and consumption of heat and power in the final stage.
The students of the School of Chemical Engineering are now looking forward to the next NACES in 2022 which shall be hosted by the Universiti Teknologi Mara.
